We have some big news to share with students and educators in Canada.
Thea has been approved by the Government of Alberta as a student aid study tool. That means eligible post-secondary students in Alberta can now have their annual Thea+ subscription paid for through Alberta Student Aid. For those students, Thea+ costs nothing out of pocket.
This is a milestone we're really proud of, and it's one we think says a lot about where learning tools are headed.
What this means for Alberta students
Post-secondary students with a documented permanent or persistent/prolonged disability can include Thea+ as assistive software on their Schedule 4 form, the application for the Federal/Provincial Grant for Post-Secondary Students with Disabilities. The cost is covered through the Canada Student Grant for Services and Equipment (CSG-DSE) or the Alberta Grant for Students with Disabilities (GFD).
In plain terms: Thea+ can now sit right alongside the other assistive tools an accessibility advisor already recommends, and the grant pays for it.
With Thea+, students get unlimited Smart Study and Practice Test questions, no wait times, and all of Thea's premium features for a full year.
Are you an accessibility advisor or student in Alberta?
We put together a step-by-step guide to adding Thea+ to a student's Schedule 4, including a sample rationale you can copy right into the form.
See how to get Thea+ coveredWhy Thea is a good fit for student aid
There are a lot of AI tools out there right now, and plenty of them are built to do the work for students. That might help with a grade in the short term, but it leaves students walking into exams not actually knowing the material.
Thea works the other way around. Students upload their own course materials, like notes, slides, and lecture transcripts, and Thea turns them into personalized, adaptive practice. Then Thea asks the questions, and the student does the answering. Thea does not write or edit a student's work. That makes it easy to recommend without any academic integrity concerns.
For students who have a hard time with attention, processing, or recall, that format matters. Studying happens in short, active rounds, and the questions adapt to what each student hasn't mastered yet. Instead of rereading notes and hoping something sticks, students practice pulling information from memory, which is what actually helps it stay.
It's also part of why Thea has a 4.9 star rating, has been named the best online study tool of 2026, and is trusted by millions of learners and educators around the world.
How it works
- The student meets with their Accessibility Advisor to talk through goals and supports, and applies for Alberta Student Aid.
- The advisor adds Thea+ to Schedule 4 under Assistive Software, with the annual price and a short rationale.
- The student submits the form through their Alberta Student Aid account, then upgrades to Thea+ once the grant is approved.
