Old universities collect a lot of things over the centuries: libraries, traditions, alumni who still talk about that one professor. And, apparently, ghosts.
Just in time for Halloween, we rounded up five of the most haunted universities in the world. Some of these stories are pure campus legend. Some are rooted in very real, very dark moments in history. All of them have a hotspot you can still visit, if you're brave enough. Did yours make the list?
1. University of St Andrews
St Andrews, Scotland · Founded 1413
Scotland's oldest university has plenty of ghosts to choose from, but its most famous legend is written right into the ground. In 1528, the young preacher Patrick Hamilton was burned at the stake outside St Salvator's Chapel for his Protestant beliefs. Today, his initials, "PH," are set into the cobblestones where he died.
Students swear that stepping on them means you'll fail your exams. According to student lore, the only cure is the May Dip: a sunrise plunge into the freezing North Sea on May Day. We'd recommend just walking around the initials.

2. Flagler College
St. Augustine, Florida · Founded 1968
At Flagler, students live inside history. The college occupies the former Hotel Ponce de León, a luxury resort built by railroad tycoon Henry Flagler that opened in 1888. The building is stunning. It's also, according to legend, still occupied by a few guests who never left.
The most famous story says Flagler's spirit is trapped in a single floor tile in the lobby. Upstairs, rumor has it that a sealed room on the fourth floor belonged to a woman who checked in and never checked out.

3. Heidelberg University
Heidelberg, Germany · Founded 1386
Germany's oldest university has nearly 650 years of history, and not all of it is easy to look at. During the Nazi era, professors who were Jewish or who opposed the regime were forced out of the university, and some were later persecuted and killed. Legend says their old lecture halls never forgot them: chalkboards that erase themselves, and words that appear overnight in rooms that were locked.
For a lighter (but still eerie) stop, Heidelberg is also home to its old Studentenkarzer, a student prison where misbehaving students were locked up for offenses like disturbing the peace, right up until 1914. Its walls are still covered in the graffiti they left behind.

4. Gettysburg College
Gettysburg, Pennsylvania · Founded 1832
In July 1863, one of the bloodiest battles of the American Civil War was fought in and around the town of Gettysburg, and the college was right in the middle of it. Pennsylvania Hall was used as a field hospital, treating wounded soldiers in the days that followed.
Its most famous ghost story: two college staff members working late stepped into the elevator and pressed the button for the first floor. The elevator went past it, down to the basement. When the doors opened, they found themselves looking at a Civil War operating room, surgeons, wounded soldiers, and all. They pressed the button again. Fast.

5. Nagasaki University
Nagasaki, Japan · Founded 1857 (as a medical school)
This one isn't a campfire story, and we want to tell it with the care it deserves. Nagasaki University's medical school traces its roots back to 1857, making it one of the oldest centers of Western medical education in Japan.
On August 9, 1945, the medical college stood about 600 meters from the hypocenter of the atomic bomb. More than 800 students and staff were killed. Many people believe their spirits remain on campus, with reports of quiet figures and voices at night.
Today, the university remembers them, and it has also become a center for research on the long-term effects of radiation, work that continues to help people around the world.

Honorable mention: University of Toronto
Since Canada is our Country of the Month, we couldn't resist one more. Legend says that while University College was being built in the 1850s, a stonemason named Ivan Reznikoff was killed by a fellow worker in a love triangle gone wrong, and his body was hidden somewhere on the grounds. Students and staff have been reporting sightings of "Ivan" ever since.
